Pandemic Influenza (aka swine or avian flu)

Pandemic flu is potentially the most devastating biologic threat to many populations world-wide, but especially those already devastated by lack of resources, access to medical care, and efficient health care infrastructures. A pandemic is a series of outbreaks occurring in many countries throughout the world. A strain of flu that normally affects non-human species is the cause of flu outbreaks (epidemics) and pandemics. Recent strains to cross over to human populations include H1N1 (swine flu) and H5N1 (avian flu). Both swine flu and avian flu have been used synonymously with pandemic (pan) flu.
